


TE WAHAROA - GATEWAY TO THE TRADES




Overview
This 10-week course is free for successful Māori applicants who are interested in a career within the construction industry, whether it is to become a plumber, carpenter, builder, scaffolder etc. Our ultimate goal is to help rangatahi get a paid job at the end by equipping them with the skills, work experience, certifications, mindset and job interviews they need to be successful.
What You Need To Know

is for people aged 17 to 24 years and your whaanau support is essential

runs for 10 weeks, Monday to Friday from 6.30 am until 4pm each day

Fees Free

requires you to undertake a drug test, the results will be provided to you.
What’s Included When You Register

A full set of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), which allows you to access sites and meet their company
safety requirements - this is yours to keep. -
If you become successfully employed while on the course, you’ll get a small kit of tools that align to the trade
pathway you select. -

✓ Visit building sites, manufacturing plants and retail outlets to get to see the range of trades in the construction
sector in action.
✓ Talk with tradies in the industry about what their trade is all about and what to expect when you become an
employee.
✓ Get your CV ready for interviews.
✓ Hear from employers about what they look for when recruiting and what they look for in a new employee.
✓ Develop your ability to communicate in a group.
✓ Take part in toolbox meetings prior to site visits to build your knowledge and awareness of Health & Safety
requirements.
✓ Get to work at a site of your chosen trade on work placement for an employer.
(You will be required to get yourself to a host employer’s place of work for work placement.)
✓ We aim to give you the opportunity to be interviewed by employer/s for a job with their company.
(Interviews may be during the day or in the evening depending on employer’s requirements.)
✓ If successful, you will be offered work experience from Monday to Friday for 6 weeks. (Hours of work will be
at the discretion of the employer.)
✓ You will graduate the Te Waharoa programme. All going well, you will sign into a BCITO apprenticeship
training agreement with your employer.
✓ Celebrate completing the Te Waharoa programme with your whaanau & Waikato Tainui.
